New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)

The New York Stock Exchange is the biggest stock market of the world, in terms of trading volume in the US dollar currency. Its foundation dates back to the 17th of May, 1792, and currently the companies beind listed have five-times the market capitalisation than those listed in NASDAQ, with a global capitalisation exceeding 20 trillion USD.

According to the figures published by the NYSE Group, the organisation which operates the NYSE, the daily share volume shows a steady increase over the years, reaching 500 million in 1987, 1 billion in 1997 and 5 billion in 2005.

The highest price a company had to pay for membership to the NYSE was 4 million USD in December 2005, while the highest trading volume in one day exceeded 3 billion shares on the 24th of June, 2005. This is according to the figures published so far, pending the 2006 reports.

On the 19th of October the index closed at its highest Dow Jones Industrial Average rate, at 12,011.73. However most of the growth was experienced in the period between 1991 and 1999, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average rate approximately trebled from 3,004.46 on the 17th of April, 1991, to 11,014.69 on the 3rd of May, 1999.
